Sanni Yakuma · an exorcism for code

kennethreitz/maya

In the healing ritual of southern Sri Lanka, masked dancers call out the eighteen Sanni demons, each the cause of an illness, mock them, and send them away. Tonight the patient is a codebase.

8 blessings · 2 of 18 demons found · 16 never came near

Ata Paliya

First, the blessings

The ritual does not begin with demons. It begins with dances that bring blessings. So here is what this repository already does well.

Daha Ata Sanniya

The demons come out

One by one, each demon steps into the torchlight, boasts of what it has done, is mocked, and agrees to leave. Every claim below rests on evidence found in the code itself.

2 demons remain. Read each cure, then send the demon away.

brings deafness · in code: swallowed errors

clear
The screams of errors in core.py are music to my ears. I swallowed the failure at line 262 and hushed the KeyError at line 375. You think your logic is sound while I hide the truth. Now the drums beat too loud for me. I vanish.

The exorcism

Replace bare except and silent pass with explicit exception handling.

  1. Replace the bare except at line 262 in src/maya/core.py with (ValueError, OverflowError) to properly handle timestamp limits.
  2. Replace the silent pass for KeyError at line 375 in src/maya/core.py with a logging statement or a fallback value.

brings lameness and paralysis · in code: paralysed repo

severe
Twenty-seven months of silence have turned this garden into stone. Twenty-one souls cry out in the issues and pull requests, but no one answers. I have frozen the clock of maya so it never ticks again. The dancers' energy is too strong! I flee.

The exorcism

Reactivate project maintenance and address the community backlog.

  1. Review and triage the 21 open issues and pull requests.
  2. Update setup.py to ensure compatibility with the latest Python versions.
  3. Publish a maintenance update to signal the repository is no longer paralysed.

The leader of the demons

The project reached a state of functional completeness for its original scope, leading to a natural decline in activity and a gradual slide into maintenance neglect.

The absence of most demons shows a high-quality initial build, but the paralysis and swallowed errors are typical of a project that was left to idle without a transition to a formal maintenance mode.
